メキシコシティの中心にあるアステカの寺院、テンプロ・マヨールの発掘調査で、650個の頭蓋骨や、数千個の人間の骨からなる塔が発見された。ロシアメディアが報じた。

塔の直径はおよそ6メートル。寺院にある、アステカ神話の太陽神・軍神・狩猟神であるウィツィロポチトリを祀る部屋の隅で発見された。

現在、塔の基盤まで掘り進めるには至っていない。

専門家によると、「スペインの征服者の恐怖を呼び起こした、頭蓋骨からなる迫力ある塔」の情報は、1521年にテノチティトランを征服したスペイン人のコンキスタドール、エルナン・コルテスの時代から残っている。

塔はアステカ文明に普及していた、人間を生贄に捧げる儀式に関係していると見られている。

テンプロ・マヨールは1325年に建てられ、1521年、スペイン人の征服によりほぼ完全に破壊された。
