先に米地質調査所（USGS）は、フィリピンでマグニチュード6.9の地震が起きたと発表していた。震源地はミンダナオ島のダバオ市南部のマグサイサイから南へ5.6キロの地点。

同紙によると、現時点では犠牲者が出ているのは南ダバオ州。地震によっていくつかの家屋が損壊した。
