捜査の結果、殺害された男性はシリア、イラク出身の2人の移民に襲撃されたという説が浮上した。このことから、移民に対して門戸を広げる政策を見直し、より厳格な姿勢を示すよう政権に求める市民と、事件を理由にナショナリズム的風潮の高まりを許さぬよう求める人々と、現地の世論は真っ二つに分かれた。

ケムニッツの抗議行動はすでに数日にわたって続けられており、止む気配を見せていない。この間に数名の怪我人が出ている。
