チーターはアフリカとアジアの2種にわけられる。アフリカのチーターは餌を探すためたびたび長い距離を移動するが、アジアのチーターは普通、慣れたテリトリーから出ない。アジアのチーターはただペットとして、そしてイランでの国立公園にのみ保持されている。

今日、チーター全種の総数はわずか7000頭で、うち多くはアフリカに生息。生息地の総面積は今日、元の土地の9%に過ぎず、もしチーターが生息する諸国の政府が手を打たなければ、チーターは間もなく絶滅するおそれがある。
アジアのチーターを何より脅かしているのは、彼らの伝統的なテリトリーを人間が絶え間なく侵すこと。
情勢は、広範囲を移動するチーターの生息地の77%が、国立公園や保護区の圏外にあることで悪化している。もし状況が今日のように続くと、チーターの生息数は下がり続け、絶滅の恐れすらある。
先に伝えられたところによると、この半世紀で世界の野生動物の数はほぼ3分の2に減少した。
