２２日夜、スタジアム「マンチェスター・アリーナ」で、米歌手アリアナ・グランデさんのコンサートが行われた。コンサートの来客から最初の通報があったのは２２時３５分（日本時間６時３５分）。
メディアは当初、爆発は直接関係のない音だとみなした。大勢の観客が大きな風船を持っており、その一つがマイクの近くで割れたと思った。この予想はスタジアムの運営当局がパニックを避けるために「恐ろしいことは何も起こっていない」とアナウンスしたことによって裏付けられた。
現在、１９人の死亡が確認されている。ノースウエスト救急搬送NHSトラストはツイッターで、５９人が搬送されたと伝えた。
未だに実際のところスタジアムで何が起こったのかについての公式情報はない。
ロイター通信は、米当局者２人の話を引用し、爆発は自爆犯が引き起こした可能性があると報じた。

テレビ局スカイニュースは、病院当局者の話として、負傷者は「榴散弾によるような」傷を負ったと伝えた。
英メイ首相は爆発を「恐ろしいテロだ」と指摘した。近いうちにも地元警察のトップが声明を表すとみられている。
