ヒョードルは２０１５年末、日本での総合格闘技イベント「RIZIN（ライジン）」で、３年ぶりにリングに復帰していた。
ヒョードルは米国のマット・ミトリオン氏との対決を控え、長期のトレーニングに励んでおり、今年２月、公開トレーニングを終えた時点で米「ＭＭＭファイティング」紙に対して現在の心境を語っていた。
