事件が起きたのは、テキサス州のサンアントニオから約４０キロ離れたサザーランドスプリングズにあるバプテスト教会。現地時間５日１１時３０分（日本時間６日０２時３０分）日曜礼拝中、男が銃を乱射した。
CNNによると、２６人が死亡、２４人以上が負傷した。今後犠牲者数が増える恐れもある。犯人が警察によって射殺されたか、自殺したかは不明。
今回の事件を受け、トランプ米大統領はツイッターに「日本から情勢を注視している」と投稿した。
