21日午前、メルボルンの中心で白いZuki 4X4のジープが交差点を渡る歩行者に向かって猛スピードで突っ込んだ。これにより19人が負傷。そのうち数人は重体。警察によれば、ドライバーの行為は過失ではなく、故意だが、今のところ動機ははっきりしていない。警察はドライバーの他にもう1人を拘束している。
目撃者の証言によれば、ジープのスピードはおよそ時速100キロで、赤信号を完全に無視し、減速しないまま歩行者に突っ込んでいる。
ABCテレビのインタビューに答えた目撃者のジョン氏は車に衝突した被害者の体が空中に舞い上がり、事故の模様は悲惨だったと語っている。
