2017年12月、日本政府は米国製の陸上配備型迎撃システム「イージス・アショア」2基の導入を決定した。秋田、山口両県に1基ずつ配備され、2023年度の運用開始をめざす。
なおロシアと中国は、地域の軍事バランスを崩すとして、日本のミサイル防衛増強に反対している。
