今回の月食は、モスクワ時間の27日21時24分に始まり、皆既の段階は22時30分から0時13分まで続いた。月食はロシア全土から観察でき、極東でさえも見ることができた。

月食の継続時間がここまで長くなった理由は、月が「遠地点(地球から最も遠ざかる位置)」近くにあり、地球によって投げかけられる影よりも著しく小さかったからだ。
今回の月食は、火星が「衝(地球から見た時に、太陽系の惑星が太陽と正反対の位置にある状態)」を迎えて地球に大接近するという別の天文現象と重なった。赤い惑星は地球に最も接近し、その輝きは木星を上回った。その結果、火星はこの夜、太陽、月、金星に次いで最も明るい天体となった。
