火災は一般公開の終了後に発生し、けが人はおらず、勤務していた監視員４人は、火の手が上がる建物から無事に避難したという。
火は、１９世紀初めに建てられた邸宅の木の梁に沿って急速な勢いで広がり、屋根の大部分が崩壊した。
博物館には、考古学的遺物、エジプトや南米のミイラ、古代遺物、古い生活用品、鉱物など約２０００万点の収蔵品があったが、現在伝えられている情報によると、そのほぼ全てが消失した。
