リストのうち5つの火山はアラスカ州にあり、大型の都市、重要なインフラ施設、通りの激しい空中回廊付近にある。
残り11の火山はワシントン州、カリフォルニア州、オレゴン州に集中。通常、全て人口密集地帯にあり、噴火が起きれば大規模な物的・人的被害が予測される。
イエローストーンの火山は「非常に高い脅威」の火山リストには入らなかった。専門家は、異常な動きを検出しなかったためだ。
USGSの報告書には他に「高い脅威」の火山39、「中程度の脅威」が49、「低い脅威」が34あり、「非常に低い脅威」の火山は21となっている。
