インターネット紙「24-MY.info」によれば、 米国がこれほどの寒さに見舞われるのは極めて稀。気象学者たちによれば、この厳冬はモロッコからの温暖前線により、北極圏地域の急激な温暖化が起きたために生じたもの。このため極循環が壊れ、寒気の塊が南に移動し、米国を覆った。
予報ではシカゴでは少なくとも1月末までは南極よりも寒くなる。気温はマイナス33度まで下がるが、強風のため体感気温はマイナス46度まで達する。

ナイアガラの滝を凍り付かせた寒波は、今度はニューヨーク州の市民たちをも襲った。ウィスコンシン州とイリノイ州、そしてアラバマ州とジョージア州の南部でも大雪が予想されている。中西部の州では、多くの学校や企業が閉鎖された。いくつかの都市では、ホームレスのための臨時の暖房センターが用意されている。
