中世の記録によると、キリストの墓はキリスト教を公認したコンスタンティヌス1世の母親、聖ヘレナ皇后によって西暦4世紀に発見された。墓は1700年の間に数回修理、建て直された。
ナショナル ジオグラフィック誌によると、墓の年代測定のために基盤部分と、2016年に見つかった大理石の板の複数の断片が採取された。
科学分析の結果、墓はコンスタンティヌス1世とその息子たちコンスタンティヌス2世ならびにコンスタンティウス2世が統治していたおよそ西暦345年につくられたことがわかった。
これについて考古学者たちは、墓が実際にコンスタンティヌス1世とその母親ヘレナによってつくられた可能性があることを裏付ける重要な論拠であるとの見方を示している。
